Art Basel Meets L-Class
A Sea Ray L650 drew admiration from aficionados at the famed Miami Beach Art Basel festival.
Magic isn’t a single, finite entity, but rather the result of several favorable elements coming together at just the right time. Art Basel Miami Beach seeks to create such an astonishing experience every year by bringing well-curated art from around the world together with admirers as richly diverse as the pieces themselves.
The 2015 show, which took place December 3 through 6, featured art forms that played to all the senses—from musical performances to large-scale sculptures to brand-new pieces “fresh from the artist’s studio”—connected by a theme of transformation. And yet it was Sea Ray’s L650 yacht, lauded for its striking beauty and its ability to completely alter the on-water experience, that stole the spotlight at the RBC Collector’s Gala.
“Those who attended the event have discerning taste and appreciate the finer things in life,” says Sarah Pisapia of Interluxe, the firm who organized the Gala. “The L650 is a stunning piece of art itself and was very well received.”
RBC Wealth Management participates in Art Basel Miami every year, inviting its biggest clients to linger at different parties, galleries and dinners over the course of the weekend. During this year’s event, the company hosted its own gala at a private island home in one of Miami’s most prestigious neighborhoods. The 27,000-square-foot home featured a private dock where the L650 commanded the attention of the gala guests.
The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism and several other sponsors came together to host the Grand Caymanthemed gala. The balmy evening air, lush green grounds, palm trees, soft glowing lights around an in-ground pool, tropical centerpieces and access to the water helped set the tone. Guests sipped on cocktails and enjoyed Caribbean-themed food and decadent desserts. Entertainment for the evening included music and sound demonstrations by McIntosh and a live acoustic guitar performance.
The magic from the gala continued onboard the L650. A representative from MarineMax Miami welcomed guests with a complimentary glass of champagne from the aft wet bar, as the lights of Miami twinkled in the background. The yacht bobbed gently in the canal while some guests made themselves comfortable in the inviting cockpit seating. Others slipped into the spacious, air-conditioned salon, where the L650’s expansive windows and sunroof afforded clear views of the city.
From the salon, event-goers made their way across the cabin’s open floorplan and explored the yacht’s three staterooms. In the full-beam master, they admired features including the plush, queen-size innerspring mattress, the expansive closet system and the modern rain shower in the master head. Wowed by what they saw and eager to experience the L650 underway, several guests signed up to experience a sea trial through MarineMax Miami.
“Checking out the L650 was one of the highlights of the night for me,” said event-goer Tracey Martin. “With light music playing in the background and the smells of the Caribbean all around, there was no better seat to take it all in than onboard the yacht.”
In addition to Miami, Art Basel has shows in Basel, Switzerland (the original location), and Hong Kong. The Miami show featured significant work from the masters of modern and contemporary art, as well as emerging artists, from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa. The art on display includes paintings, photography, film, performances and large-scale installations—all becoming part of Miami’s vibrant outdoor landscape.
